Why this is useful
Excess phosphorus can contribute to eutrophication and harmful algal blooms, threatening aquatic ecosystems and potentially affecting irrigation, crops, livestock and community water uses.
Laboratory analysis provides the most reliable measurements, but sample transport and processing can take time. A simple field-screening assay could provide preliminary on-site information to support faster sampling, monitoring and follow-up decisions.

Important limitation
Phosphorus indicates nutrient loading and bloom potential. It does not directly identify algae, cyanobacteria or algal toxins, and laboratory confirmation may be needed.
